Honest answers to the questions readers actually ask

These are the questions people email us most often, in the order they typically appear in someone's research process. If you have a follow-up not covered here, write to us at [email protected].

Safety & quality

Is dental work in Mexico actually safe?
There is no country-level yes/no answer. Dental work in Mexico can be lower-risk when the specific dentist, imaging plan, materials, sterilization process, warranty terms and aftercare path are documented in writing and reviewed by a licensed dentist who can evaluate your case. ToothAbroad labels the evidence we have seen; we do not certify clinics or guarantee outcomes.
How do I know a clinic is qualified?
Ask for: (1) the dentist's degree and license number issued by the Mexican Dental Association (CDMX or state equivalent), (2) continuing-education certifications in the specific procedure (implantology, prosthodontics), (3) the implant brand they use, and (4) malpractice insurance. Reputable clinics should be able to provide these in writing. On ToothAbroad profiles, we label whether evidence is public, clinic-submitted, partner evidence, or still unverified.
What if something goes wrong while I'm at home?
For most issues, a local US dentist can resolve them. Implant brands like Straumann or Nobel are universal — any qualified US dentist can fit a crown on them or do follow-up. For complications specifically tied to the surgery, you return to the Mexican clinic. Most reputable clinics warranty their work for 5–10 years; we document the exact terms on each clinic profile.

Cost & insurance

Will my US dental insurance cover treatment in Mexico?
Some PPO plans (Delta Dental PPO, Cigna, Aetna) reimburse a percentage of out-of-network treatment performed abroad — typically 50–80% of UCR up to your annual cap ($1,500–$2,000). HMO and DMO plans almost never cover. Submit the standard ADA claim form along with the Mexican clinic's itemized invoice (in English, which most provide). Reimbursement timeline: 4–8 weeks.
Are there hidden costs?
Reputable clinics quote all-inclusive: surgery, prosthesis, post-op kit, follow-ups. The variables are: (1) bone graft or sinus lift if needed (revealed at the CT scan), (2) crown material upgrade if you choose, (3) US dentist follow-up if you opt for it. We list these explicitly in every procedure guide.
How does payment work?
Most clinics accept US credit cards (often with a 3–4% fee), Mexican peso debit cards, or USD cash. Some offer financing through CareCredit US. Wire transfer is also accepted but rarely needed. Compare the paper trail, fees, refund wording and dispute/chargeback rules before choosing a payment method.

Logistics

How many trips will I need?
Single implants and single crowns: typically 2 trips, with 4–6 months in between for healing. All-on-4: 2 trips, same gap. Veneers: 1–2 trips depending on lab time. Root canal: 1 trip. We document the protocol for each procedure in its guide.
Do I need a passport?
For Los Algodones from Yuma, US travelers commonly use a passport book; some crossings may also accept a US passport card or Enhanced Driver's License. Check current CBP rules before travel. Real ID alone is NOT sufficient for crossing.
Can I drive into Mexico?
Yes, but most patients don't. US car insurance does not cover Mexico, and the parking on the US side is cheap and convenient. Park at Quechan Casino lot or Algodones Border Lot ($8/day), walk across, walk back. See our crossing-the-border guide for details.
Where do I stay?
Most patients stay in Yuma, Arizona. Hampton Inn Yuma, Holiday Inn Express, and La Quinta Inn are all 5–10 minutes from the border. $95–$145/night. There are no hotels in Los Algodones itself — it's a day-trip town.

How ToothAbroad works

Are you a clinic?
No. ToothAbroad is an independent editorial guide. We don't perform any procedures, employ any dentists, or own any clinics. We help patients compare evidence-labelled clinic profiles and, only if the patient later consents, make a tracked written introduction.
Do you take money from clinics?
ToothAbroad may have disclosed commercial relationships with clinics in the future, but clinics cannot buy a positive review, paid ranking, safety label, or removal of risk warnings. Our editorial process and evidence labels stay separated from any commercial relationship: a clinic can appear as editorial research without an agreement, and any clinic with an agreement can still be downgraded, flagged, or removed if evidence or outcome signals worsen.
Will I be charged anything?
No. We are free to use for patients, always. If ToothAbroad later has a commercial relationship with a clinic, it must be disclosed and tracked with your consent and reference ID; you should still compare the clinic's written price directly and there is no paid placement.
Will I get sales calls?
No. We communicate exclusively by email or WhatsApp text — no phone calls unless you specifically ask for one. The clinic you choose may follow up by email/WhatsApp once you submit a quote request, and only with the contact details you provided.
