Crossing the border to Los Algodones from Yuma — what actually happens, hour by hour

The Andrade–Algodones port of entry is one of the busiest pedestrian crossings on the US-Mexico border. About 10,000 people walk across daily, most of them American retirees and middle-class families heading to a dental, optical, or pharmacy appointment. The crossing itself is straightforward, but the timing makes the difference between a 4-hour day and an 8-hour day.

The geographic reality (in 60 seconds)

  • Los Algodones is a small Mexican town directly south of Yuma, Arizona — about 7 miles from Yuma International Airport (YUM).
  • You don't drive into town. Park at the US side (Quechan Reservation lot, $8/day), walk through the pedestrian gate. Almost everyone does it this way.
  • Most patients fly in to YUM (cheapest), though Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is sometimes cheaper if you don't mind the 3-hour drive south.
  • The clinic appointment is the entire trip. The town is 10 square blocks of dentists, opticians, and pharmacies. Plan for the appointment + lunch, not for sightseeing.

What to bring

  • Valid US passport, passport card, or Enhanced Driver's License (REAL ID is NOT enough)
  • Mexican tourist permit (FMM) — only if staying >7 days. For Los Algodones day trips: not required
  • Printed appointment confirmation from the clinic
  • Prescriptions in original bottles + doctor's note for any controlled meds
  • $50–$100 USD cash for parking, lunch, tips (cards accepted at most clinics)
  • Yuma airport (YUM) reservation OR Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) reservation if flying in

Hour-by-hour: what to expect

5:00–7:00 AM (US side)
Crossing southbound: 0–10 minutes. Pedestrians walk through the gate, no passport check southbound.
8:00–10:00 AM
Most clinics open. CT scans and consultations happen in this window.
11:30 AM – 2:00 PM
Lunchtime in town. The pedestrian street fills with US patients between appointments.
3:00–5:00 PM
Northbound (back to US): waits range 30–90 minutes. Border patrol checks passport + asks 1–2 questions about your visit.
After 6:00 PM
Most clinics close. Northbound border wait shortens to 10–20 min after 7 PM.

Trip budget (single visit, 1 night)

ItemCost (2026)
Flight to Yuma (YUM) — most western US states$280 – $450 round-trip
Flight to Phoenix (PHX) + 3-hour drive$220 – $380 round-trip + $80 rental/day
Yuma hotel (single night, mid-tier)$95 – $145 / night
Yuma Airport Park 'N' Cross parkingFree for clinic patients (most clinics) — confirm
Algodones parking on US side$8 / day
Lunch in Algodones$8 – $20 per person
Realistic round-trip total from a western US state: $500–$700 including flight, one hotel night, parking, and meals. Eastern US adds $300–$500 for the longer flight. This budget is the same regardless of how much dental work you're getting — once you're across, the marginal cost of an All-on-4 trip vs a single crown is identical.

Five tips that save real time and trouble

Cross before 8 AM if possible
Both directions are quickest in the early morning. The northbound queue grows after 11 AM.
Bring water and a snack
Northbound border wait can hit 90+ minutes in March (snowbird peak). The line is exposed to the sun.
Keep dental receipts and prescriptions visible
If CBP asks why you went, simply showing the receipt resolves the conversation in 30 seconds.
Don't bring back medications without a prescription
Mexican pharmacies sell antibiotics, painkillers, and other meds without a US prescription. Bringing them back without a prescription is a customs violation. Get the US-recognized prescription from the dentist for any post-op meds.
Don't drive into Algodones unless you have a Mexican-insured vehicle
US car insurance does not cover you in Mexico. Most patients park on the US side and walk.
Travel insurance note. US health insurance usually does not cover planned dental care in Mexico, and travel policies vary widely on dental complications, evacuation, and trip interruption. Before booking, ask the insurer in writing what is covered, what is excluded, and whether dental-treatment complications are treated differently from ordinary travel emergencies.
